Pornography: Spiritual Battleground

“If you know the enemy and know yourself,
your victory will not stand in doubt.”

Sun Tzu, Chinese General, 1st Millenium B.C.

These important words by the famous Chinese general, Sun Tzu, are applicable to the Christian’s struggle against the tide of pornography in our culture.

This is a war, you see.  Satan and his forces are our enemies and opponents.

Like moderns wars, there are many “fronts”, many battlefields.  When a general has mastery over a particular battlefield he is said to “own” that battlefield.  It is sort of like how Coalition Forces in Operation Desert Storm “owned” the skies.

Satan owns the sexual battlefield, pretty much world-wide.  And one of his most entrenched and expansive battlefields is that of pornography.

Pornography: A Sin?

NOTE:
This post will deal with adult issues and activities.

What’s the harm?  I’m only looking!!!

So goes one of the most common rebuttals to being told that viewing pornography is sin.  It reflects the view in our society and, unfortunately, among many Christians, that sexual purity and fidelity only involve the body.

Looking ain’t cheatin’!

Believe it or not, the Barna Group reports that 29% of born-again Christians say that it is morally acceptable to view movies with explicit sexual content.

This brings us to the question:  Is viewing pornography a sin?

So, You Think You Can Trust Your Kids On The Internet?

Updated for 2024

“We don’t need to install filters, we trust our kids.”

“Our kids wouldn’t be interested in that, and know that it is wrong, so we trust them with their computers in their rooms.”

Those are two common sentiments that I encounter as I do seminars on Internet safety around the country.  Sometimes it is voiced by a seminar attendee.  Sometimes by the person on the plane next to me.

I understand their feelings, but I think that they are “trusting” their kids…
in the wrong way!!!

Date Like You Fish!!! (No, really!)

Couple on ChairsI was at Starbucks the other day, packing up my laptop, and overheard the young barrista (all of 21!) complaining to a regular about how she was giving up on dating, and guys, because she never could find the right guy, etc..

The customer, who appeared to be in her 40’s, told her not to worry, that there were plenty of fish in the sea.

Of course, it was now impossible for me to NOT enter the discussion. (Those of you who know me, I see your heads nodding!!!)

I simply told the young girl:

“Look. The first thing you have to do is decide what kind of fish you want to land, and then fish where they hang out. If you want a top tier catch, you can’t be casting your line down among the catfish and other bottom feeders!”

The older woman broke out laughing, and then agreed.  The three of us chatted some more, and I left.  This led me to thinking….:

Marriage: God’s Safe Zone

Sex.

It is EVERYWHERE in our society.

No wonder youth and adults, alike, are confused about what is OK, what is sinful.  It is no wonder that many are wounded and crying on the Sexual Battlefield.

It doesn’t help that many elements in our Society continue to attack marriage as unreasonable and unnatural.  Today, sex outside of marriage is common in all types of media, and in real life.

How should we react to this as the people of God?

By teaching a view of marriage that limits sex to marriage, but in a positive way.

God The Designer: A New Paradigm For Today

I’ve got this really neat book.  It tells me not to use the GREEN coolant if my truck came with the ORANGE stuff.  It’s got the specs for the fuses, and tells me what to do to ensure that my truck runs well, as designed.  It even has information for unusual conditions, such as severe weather.

Now, I don’t think that the guy’s at Ford just sat around thinking up things to put in the book, especially if it were to cause me more work.

“Normal” vs. “Acceptable”

I was talking to a father today about the current state of youth sexuality.  He asked me:  “But, that was unthinkable when we were kids, but it’s “normal” today, so what can we do about it?”

Normal.

A common term, today, that means:

  • Everyone is doing it.
  • It’s a fact.
  • It’s what we do.

I don’t buy it.  We have to define “normal” in terms of “desirable” or, even better, what is ACCEPTABLE!
