NOTE:
This post deals frankly but respectfully with issues regarding sexuality
& God’s standard for humanity. If this makes you uncomfortable,
please consider that we are discussing GOD’S DESIGN.
“Keep your wits about you.”
That’s what my dad said whenever I went out on dates, ‘WAY back when I was in high school. He said that to remind me to stay pure in God’s eyes.
Today we see purity rings, purity pledges, and more. Within the Church, purity is an important subject that needs discussion.
But, in our society, before we can discuss a subject, we have to define it. Today’s language is far too slippery.
That includes “purity”.
Biblical purity is the absence of sexual sin in our lives. It has different meanings depending on our marital status:
- Single: Refraining from any and all sexual activity before marriage.
- Married: Refraining from any and all sexual activity outside of marriage, or from sexual activity that violates love and respect.
As we know from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), God’s standard is not limited to what we do with our bodies. God is concerned with the entire person. What we think, what we lust for and over, matter to God. Jesus’ said just looking at another with lust was sin. That indicates that we are to refrain from sexual sin on all levels.
That is God’s design, and He has good reason for it. He is pretty clear about what is, and is not, acceptable. Not sure? Just read chapters 18 & 20 in the book of Leviticus.
In Today’s society, though, we have many people who want to “nuance” this. They say things like:
- “I’m only looking.”
- “My spouse isn’t meeting my needs.”
- “_______________ isn’t really sex/cheating.”
- “If we both agree, then an open marriage is OK.”
- “Christian polygamy is OK if we’re all believers.”
We should note that most “nuances” to the issue of purity are based upon our standard and, to be honest, our desire to explain away why we are sinning.
God’s standard is pretty clear, though. Sex is limited to men and women who are married…to each other.
With that understood, the question then becomes: How, then, do we live in a way that is pleasing to God?
