REDBOX! It seems like you see the REDBOX kiosks everywhere! (It’s almost like Starbucks!) Folks are standing around, renting DVDs, Blu-Rays, and games!
Well, you may not know that REDBOX launched a streaming service called REDBOX INSTANT a little less than a year ago. With this service you can stream movies, reserve DVDs at the local kiosk, and more!
Let’s take a look!!!!
REDBOX INSTANT is a good adjunct to regular REDBOX. For a single $8.95/month fee (no contract) you get to:
- Stream movies to your digital device.
- Rent up to 4 DVDs per month.
- Rent streaming titles that are not yet included in the subscription service.
This is a pretty good deal, especially if you already rent from the kiosks. There are tons of movies, from old black-and-whites to the latest blockbusters!
You can access REDBOX INSTANT many, many ways:
- Your web browsers
- Smartphones: Apple, Android, and Windows
- Tablets: Apple, Android, and Windows
- Roku streaming boxes
- Smart TVs, including Google TV, Samsung, and LG devices.
- DVD/BLU-RAY Players by Samsung
- Playstation 3 & 4
- X-Box 360 and X-Box ONE
- and more…..
Unfortunately, as with all streaming services, the selection covers the range from G-rated (SANTA CLAUSE: THE MOVIE) to NC-17 (LAST TANGO IN PARIS) to Not Rated (The Curious Female). While there are no XXX titles (that I saw), the wide selection of movies means parents have to be cautious when bringing REDBOX INSTANT into the home. This is not only because of nudity/sexuality but also due to mature themes and horror films.
Fortunately, REDBOX INSTANT has done its homework and has provided parents with a pretty darn good set of parental controls. These controls allow for two things:
- Restricting the purchasing/renting of movies (that are not available through the basic subscription) and
- Restricting the content based upon age.
Unlike the NETFLIX parental controls, which are set on an account-wide basis, REDBOX INSTANT has wisely designed controls that are set separately on each device that you use. This let’s parents set more restrictive limits on devices kids use while having lesser limits on their own devices, or those of older children.
Most of the devices access the parental controls the same way. So, I have created a PDF file that shows how both the web interface and Apple iOS interface (iPhones/iPods/iPads) work.
You can download this guide here.
The only thing I have found not to like about REDBOX INSTANT is the lack of TV shows. That is what makes NETFLIX and HULU+ so popular. But, the tie-in with the kiosk rental of the latest-and-greatest might make up for that with many folks.
So, enjoy the movies….safely!
