NOTE:
This post deals frankly but respectfully with issues regarding sexuality
& God’s standard for humanity. If this makes you uncomfortable,
please consider that we are discussing GOD’S DESIGN.
Impure. Impurity.
We all know we are sinful. So, when we talk about impurity we often just chalk it up to not being “sinless”? If we’re not yet sinless, I guess we have to tolerate a “little sin” mixed in with our piety. So, a little impurity, even sexual impurity, is inevitable and should not be feared. Right?
WRONG!
Impurity causes things to break, or under-perform. Put water in a gas tank and you will see the effects. Enough impurities cause a system to stop functioning properly. Just fill up a radiator that contains GREEN coolant with some “ORANGE” coolant and you will soon discover such impurities can be costly.
Impurity, especially moral and sexual impurity, is anything that is not pleasing to the Father, which breaks His commandments and corrupts His design. It can arise among singles, and couples.
The danger of impurity lies not in it being something “different” that creates a mixture, like throwing a few cashews into bag of peanuts. The danger lies in the fact that impurity, especially moral/sexual impurity, is a contaminant that subtracts from what God desires of us. It is not something that is just “in the mix.” It is really an INFECTION. It doesn’t just sit there, it grows, it feeds, ot consumes, just like weeds can consume a garden. Impurity may explode immediately in our lives, or it may, like cancer, lie dormant and do its damage later.
The impurity of sin interacts with us on an emotional and physical level and, left unchecked, grows. Eventually it can completely take control. The brain records any image, sound, or sensation we experience. It never erases them. They are ever-present in our memories and able to arise to influence our desires and our standards. Therefore sinful thoughts, images, and memories are always there, always ready to be exploited by the enemy to lead us back down into sin. Impurities are used to create desires, and that is deadly.
James, Jesus’ brother, wrote:
“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.
These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow,
it gives birth to death.”James 1:14-15 (NLT)
Impurity, either in thought, actions, or MEMORY, is the deadly “seed” that Satan uses to tempt us. It is a weed in our garden. It takes many forms:
- Lustful thoughts about anyone not our spouse.
- Use of pornography and erotica.
- Viewing inappropriate movies and TV shows.
- Bringing “sinful” acts into the bedroom.
It is best if we never let such weeds take root. Here is what we can do:
- Avoid getting “weed seeds” in our field! In other words, keep impure media, conversations, and activities far from us. Foremost in this effort is prayer, followed by obedience.
- Put out LOTS of weed-killer. That means staying in the Word!
- Pull out any weeds that may have taken root in your life. That requires true repentance and confession.
- Help our neighbors. Couples should support each other’s need for purity, and singles should have someone to hold them accountable!
Jesus knew all about the effect of weeds. He mentioned them in Matthew 13. Because of His sacrifice we can be free of weeds. But we have to WANT to be free.
Beware of impurity. It takes root…and kills.
How will you keep your Garden free from impurities?
