In Fiddler on the Roof, they used “matchmakers” to find a spouse.  Those still exist, but they are few and expensive (your mother and aunts do not count).  So, what is a Christian Single Again to do?  How are you going to meet someone, someone you will want to go out with?

Well, before you consider trolling bars, clubs, and the like, make sure that you read my blog post, DATE LIKE YOU FISH! NO…REALLY!

Now that that is out of the way, let’s look at a new, 21st Century method of meeting MR./MISS RIGHT (as opposed to Mr./Miss Right Now!)

Let’s take a look at ONLINE DATING!

Is Your Church/Family Data Tornado-Ready?

Tornado Damage @ St. Barnabas UMC

Yesterday (April 4th)  we had as many as 12 tornadoes come through the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.  It was exciting to say the least!  Fortunately, by the Grace of God, it appears that there were no fatalities and relatively few injuries.  Given the destruction, it was indeed a miraculous day.

St. Barnabas United Methodist Church in Arlington took a hit.  Many homes were damaged or completely destroyed.  The picture of the damage brought to mind the need for churches and homes to have their data backed up and that they had a recovery plan.

Are you prepared?

After becoming “single again” and healing up there is a strong chance that you will begin dating.  Even if you don’t have kids, getting back into the dating arena has its difficulties.  If you DO have kids, it is that much more complex.  Since you are not just impacting your life, but also the lives of your kids, it is important that you take a considered approach. Let’s look at some issues to consider for all children and some also based upon the ages of children.

It is bad enough to be “Single Again” and have all the internal pressures to be impure, based upon our normal desires and our history of sexual activity.  But, in the 21st Century there are a lot of EXTERNAL pressures and temptations to deal with.  If we are going to be successful in defeating these threats we need to identify them!

Let’s face it:  Being single in the 21st Century is tough, especially if you are also a Christian Single!  Having been married and sexually active it is especially challenging to adjust to being completely celibate!  As we saw in the last post, it is important to identify threats and vulnerabilities.  If we don’t know of a danger, or weakness, then we can never defeat it.

As stated in Frank Herbert’s novel, DUNE:  “The first step in avoiding a trap is knowing it’s there!”  (Duke Leto Atreides)

So, let’s continue our threat assessment!

Let’s face it: Virgins have it easier than “Single Agains” when it comes to staying sexually pure.  That’s because:

  1. They don’t have habits and responses engrained and on “automatic” due to married life, and
  2. Frankly, they don’t know what they are missing!

So, if you are a Single Again and wish to stay within God’s boundaries for sex, you have a battle ahead of you.

Well, when I was in the Navy, the first part of dealing with a future battle was the “Threat Assessment”.  Let’s look at what the threat is made up of for a “Single Again”!

HELP! My Child Hit A Porn Site! What Do I Do NOW????

Even with the best filters, etc., it is not impossible that, somehow or another, your child will accidentally hit a porn site.

Sad, but true.

So, WHAT DO YOU DO???

Screaming, panicing, and ranting are not the paths to take.  You don’t want to say/scream things like:

  • “What they (the people in the movie) are doing is WRONG!
  • “That is NASTY!
  • “Don’t you EVER watch that kind of stuff, ever!”
  • “That is so SINFUL!

Fortunately there is a good, systematic approach you can take that fosters an understanding of God’s boundaries and the development of a healthy attitude about sex.

HBO GO & MAX GO – What Parents Need To Know

Streaming movies and TV shows to computers and other devices is becoming more popular as more and more companies follow NETFLIX’s lead.  Time Warner, the owner of the HBO and CINEMAX networks, jumped in this pool in 2010 by offering two separate streaming services: HBO GO and MAX GO.  Both of these services are designed to allow the streaming of HBO/CINEMAX content not only to computers, but also to portable devices such as iPads, cell phones, iPods, and to TV box systems such as ROKU.

Accessing the content of these streaming services requires that you must first be a subscriber to HBO and/or CINEMAX via your cable provider.  The primary logon information for your account with your cable provider serves as the primary account for the streaming services.  However, secondary accounts, which are also called sub-accounts,such as Little Johnny’s e-mail account, can also be used to log on to the streaming services.  All that is needed is the e-mail address and password for the primary or sub-account.  This is the same info needed to check an account’s e-mail INBOX.

The problem is that these new services provide instant access to ALL of the HBO/CINEMAX line-up, and that is where parents must become involved.
